This books starts with a history of Greeting Cards. Techniques and tools are then presented in alphabetic order, from A to Z in true encyclopedia fashion. It covers a vast array of tools and techniques. It also includes some bios of some greeting card artist.Unlike other card / crafting encyclopedias, it is very general and does not provide very detailed, step-by-step instructions to produce cards for each technique. It does try to provide a picture for most of the topics mentioned.So although okay to browse for general knowledge, it is not my go-to book for ideas or how to do something.
If you are looking for a "how to" in card making this is not the book .. it has a ton of pictures of cards and some very pretty ideas .. but does not show how to accomplish them .. for instance there is a lovely shadow box on page 110 .. but no clues as to how to make it .. this is basically an alphabetical list of card making techniques and materials .. which I understand is what it states in the description .. But I was hoping for more tutorials .. Since I make cards I am hoping to at least get new ideas for my cards ... .. for $15.00 it's still a good deal .. but very few basics tips and "how to's" which was a bit disappointing.
When the author says encyclopaedia, she really means it. For example, if you can’t figure out what the heck a pencil is, the book helpfully supplies the definition. Same with “pen.†Lots of pictures of cards. Lots of definitions of varying usefulness, and a few actual descriptions of techniques. The few actual technique descriptions are the only thing that stands between two stars and one.
When I first received this book I gave it quick look and decided that I probably wouldn't use it much and would treat it like a dictionary that is only needed occasionally.I Was Wrong! I had more time later and decided to find out what possessed me to buy the book and am so glad I did. It explains and illustrates (in full color) terms, tools and techniques that I had heard of but didn't know how to try. True, the information and pictures provided are brief for a lot of techniques, but it also shows more than one way to accomplish the look you want. It is on my work table for easy access and I am using it a lot.I have been making greeting cards for about three years and would consider myself an advanced beginner. If you are a first-time or very new card maker, this is probably not the book to start with to learn the art. However, if you believe you will be a frequent card maker I suggest you purchase this book for immediate reference. I wish I had had this book a lot earlier to give me confidence to try new methods a lot sooner.I highly recommend this book!
UPDATE: After having this book for over a year now, I still love this book. If you are looking for a book with step by step instructions on how to make a greeting card, then this book is not what you are looking for. This book however does explain and show examples of many different tools, techniques and even words that are used in creating greeting cards. There are a few techniques that give instructions but not many. However, the techniques that are discussed in the book include wonderful images that you can look at. Also with the name of the technique you can easily search on the internet for videos or tutorials with step by step instructions on how to do the techniques. I still reference this book when I run into a creativity rut or want to try something new that I haven't done yet. This book is a great reference guide to add to other books for making cards.This book covers just about anything you can think of for card making. There is even some steps on how to do some of the techniques. Not all the concepts mentioned are listed with instructions but there is enough information that you can look up the instructions on the internet for free.
This book is invaluable. I am just starting out in card making. The products, paper, tape, embellishment etc is veryover whelming. I have been flipping thru the pages. It is like having my own personal instructor taking my hand andgiving me helpful tips. When I first ordered this book, i wasn't sure if it would be worth the money. Boy, was I wrong.I also love just looking thru the pages, noticing the cards. They all look so pretty. My confidence is increasing as Ithumb thru the pages. It give details on tools, glues etc. Explains the definition of so much, that card making is nownot so intimidating.
This book is interesting to look at, but the ideas are very artsy and labor intensive. They are not at all mainstream like the pictures on the cover would indicate. Because it uses the "encyclopedia" format, like ideas are not grouped together. You have to look things up by alphabetical order. I only saw a few ideas that I would consider duplicating. In all fairness, it does explain what different techniques are, but doesn't always show you how to do them. Not very useful if you're looking for an idea book.
Two years ago I started learning a new craft that interested me: cardmaking. I learned basic supplies and some "how to's" from friends who were already doing this craft. However, I never really understood the basics about the various supplies until I ordered this book. It has been invaluable to me to read about the different mediums (inks, chalk, etc.) used in stamping, to understand their specific use, and to see techniques used by various crafters. The variety of greeting cards pictured in photographs, the descriptions of the "terms" used in cardmaking, the alphabetized order in which the book is layed out all make this book a real treasure for me as I explore and create my own style in cardmaking. It's a fabulous guide to the world of greeting cards!
