Just in time for Pope Francis to canonize Saint John Paul II on 27 April 2014, we have a new book on the saint by popular Catholic youth speaker Jason Evert. Evert, Jesuit-educated at Brophy Prep, has made a career with his wife Crystalina as a popular fixture on the Catholic youth and young adult speaking circuit. Speaking in the U.S. and beyond, they emphasize the value of chastity and of saving oneself until marriage, frequently citing their inspiration from JPII's theology of the body. As such, it's highly appropriate that this new book focuses on the "five loves" of a pope who focused a good part of his ministry on recovering a self-sacrificing notion of human love for the public square. This is a reverential book written with style and humor in an accessible, non-technical style. If you've read Evert's other books on sexuality and relationships, you'll know what to expect here, but there's a more warmly personal focus in this book on the pope whose love for humanity inspired so many. If you want uplifting spiritual reading for Easter, I highly recommend this paperback book as a simple love letter to the "pope of the young" whom so many of us still recall with deep affection.
I've been dying to read this book since it came out, and when I finally got around to reading it, it didn't disappoint. It is eminently readable. This is very important to me since I desire to do spiritually reading, but I have a baby, so my brain isn't all there because if sleep deprivation and other demands! This book drew me in. The structure was engaging...the first part is a biography of JPII and the second part describes his five loves in detail. One thing that struck me was that Jason Evert said he only included stories he could verify about the Pope because he wanted to craft an authentic biography, not a mythology. I also love that in mind he Epilogue, Evert acknowledged that reading about such a giant of the faith can make us feel discouraged or unworthy. He encourages the reader to take these feelings and transform them by seeing them as inspiration to prayer. He also acknowledges that he can pray more, as well. I appreciated his humility! This book was an excellent primer on the life of JPII and it makes me want to delve deeper into his writings and look into more biographies written about him (such as George Weigel's book). Finally, one important thing I took away from this book was the impact JPII's father had on him. It was his father's lessons about piety and faithfulness that helped JPII grow into a spiritual giant. His father, through his own prayer, struggle, and example, planted the seeds in Karol that came to fruition and benefitted the entire world. As parents, we may not become great saints, but we can plant seeds in our children that the Holy Spirit and Mother Mary may water.
St JPII was the pope during the time I was growing up. I have heard the stories of how he would sneak out of the Vatican to go skiing. It made me remember he was human like the rest of us. I cried when I learned of his passing. It was like a close family member has died! Somehow I came across this book and had to buy it. Wow, his life! His dedication and love for God and the Virgin Mary and the obstacles he constantly encountered! I also have a quick version of the CD of this book (from a different site,) that I admit I listen to over and over, especially when I am distressed to focus me back on that we all can learn to be saints. That what I am facing my life is not bad and to put my trust in Jesus as St PJII did! The author did a great job in writing this, I laughed, cried, smiled and contemplated. I hope you enjoy the book as I did!
I read this book in absolute awe. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is I felt that the section on the Theology of the Body was drawn out too long, that it could have been shorter without losing it's full meaning.What a remarkable soul Saint John Paul II was/is. His mystical prayer life as it is beautifully offered by the author Jason Evert, has a power which kind of sets a goal for the rest of us to achieve - that God wants this for all of us - and will grant it to us if we truly want intimacy with Him . . . as incredible as it may seem.The confines of time and space didn't seem to confine this Pope. His deep immersion in prayer was always more important. He seemed to be already living in eternity.I really appreciate the effort it must've surely taken to find the stories that are included in this book - plus the time to actually write the book.If you seriously wish to strengthen your relationship with our Lord, with His Blessed Mother, this book is a classroom and John Paul II is our teacher. Please read it!
