What a page-turner this book was! I was hooked from the first scene when heroine Darla makes a love connection with an adorable pre-med student named Theo at a frat party. Fast forward seven years to an unexpected meeting between the two at a hospital in Nashville where they both now work. Theo is thrilled to see his college crush again, but Darla is not interested in taking any trips down memory lane with him. She's still harboring a lot of angst and bitterness over the fact that Theo knocked her up and took no responsibility for his daughter. Being a single mom all these years has been rough on Darla, and she resents the hell out of Theo. But is he really the bad guy she thinks he is, or was he just as much a victim of circumstance as she was?It's a bumpy ride for these two as they get to know each other again and try to right the wrongs of the past. I really liked Darla and Theo and felt for both of them as the story progressed. It did seem as though the fates were conspiring to keep them apart in the past, and the odds were against them in the present as well since there were so many misunderstandings and secrets between them. Of course, I was rooting for them to work through all of their issues because I wanted to see little Stella (the cutest kid ever!) get the family she deserved with both of her parents.Sidenote: Like Theo, I am a Type 1 diabetic, and it's rare that I see a book character with this illness. I applaud the author for going there and really committing to portraying diabetes and all of its difficulties in a realistic manner. She didn't just use the illness for dramatic purposes; it was part of Theo's everyday life and affected everything he did.There was a big medical crisis in the back half of the book that I thought was handled really well. The way it played out was very compelling and emotional, and it tied together the threads of family, friendship, and faith that were woven throughout the book. I shed more than a few tears as I read the final chapters and kept thinking about the characters and the story for days after I had finished it.Left Hanging is a moving and memorable tale that I highly recommend, and I look forward to reading more from Cindy Dorminy whose writing really impressed me.
This book deserves 5 stars because it is not your usual second-chance, I-had-your-baby, story. It is clever, imaginative, emotional, and (sorry to use this word) sweet! The characters are likable and flawed, so, realistic. There are many surprises and curveballs in the storyline which creates a certain tension that just adds to the enjoyment of the read.The humor is gentle, and the definition of love that Theo tells Darla comes straight from the Bible, and is beautiful. "First Corinthians's, Chapter thirteen, verses four through eight." There is good detail about being a single Mom, and also interesting facts about Type 1 Diabetes.This is a feel-good, heartwarming, and enjoyable read!
Left Hanging - PG13Violence: noneLanguage: fewer than 85, including deitySex: yes, not details. There is descriptive kissing.This is a non-denominational contemporary Christian romance where the relationship between the heroine and the Hero is based on a one-night stand. (?? Yeah, me, too!) The leads are adorable together and the "big misunderstanding" is pretty believable. Deleted.
The story was ok but the execution killed it. It took 50%of the book for Darla to tell Theo about Stella. Totally ridiculous it seemed more like dialogue between middle schoolers.
Heartwarming, and heartwrenching, this book had me running the full range of emotions. I even spent a fair amount of pages ugly crying. I could not help but be invested in Theo and Darla's love story. This definitly had a Christian theme running through it, which I'm not always a fan of, but it was not an overwhelming issue for me with this read. The characters are so well created that they felt real, and I felt like I was right there watching their story play out. Even the secondary characters were lovingly developed, so that just added more to the story. I am so glad I read this book, and most definitely recommend it...I also recommend tissues... Lots of tissues.
I loved the story. It was so sweet, yet very emotional. At first I was taken back by Darla's hostility towards Theo, but I started to understand when it was brought to the forefront, that she was under the assumption that he knew about the child, and just didn't care. Which wasn't the case at all. I was a bit disappointed that it took about 50% of the story, before the secret was brought to light. And I agree with some of the other reviewers when they stated that some of the dialogue seemed a bit immature. I didn't mind the long drawn out medical jargon, since my husband and I both have diabetes, it was easier for me to follow along.
The story starts with a frat house party. When two people hooked up they didn't give their real names. He ends up with her roommate. She ends up with his baby. Fast forward seven years. He is back in town. But so is his ex. Will she ever let him know that he is a dad? What about the ex? Is she or isn't she?
This story is like quicksand, pulling you in without you realizing until you're in so deep that your happiness is tied to the characters'. You will only make it if they do.Left Hanging is a sweet romance with an emotional grip that won't let go. I really enjoyed how Ms Dorminy used the technical aspects of their jobs (in the medical field) in a deeper way than most without feeling like I was reading a medical textbook. It was just enough to make the setting more vivid.I laughed and cried with these characters, fell in love and screamed at them. The family connections and friends were all so fantastic I seriously wanted to crawl in the book and give them all a hug!If you enjoy having your heart ripped apart and put back together, you'll love Left Hanging.
