Review

Doody's Book Review Service, Sally Ling, MD, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine -- "This is a very well put together 'notebook' containing essential information that medical students need to acquire during internal medicine rotations. It is presented in an appealing format that is effective for learning. "The book was written to enable students to study more efficiently for their clerkships, shelf exams, and boards. It is intended to consolidate important information which otherwise may need to be extracted from multiple sources. "The authors envision students using this book beginning in their second year of medical school. It will be particularly helpful during third and fourth year internal medicine clerkships. "All standard subspecialty areas with the exception of psychiatry and women's health are covered. Important clinical points are highlighted in the margins. Tables, illustrations, and clinical vignettes are effectively used. "This well edited 'notebook' concisely provides pertinent and reliable information on internal medicine related topics. It will be extremely useful during internal medicine clerkships, as well as for preparation for the shelf exam and boards."--Four-Star Review from Doody's Book Review Service (Weighted Numerical Score: 92)

I'm only into the first chapter which is cardiology. So far it states that you should shock asystole and then use transcutaneous pacing (page 13). It also states that you should give three sequential shocks with rhythm assessment between each shock for Vfib (page 31). This is just outright wrong. Anyone who has updated their ACLS since the 90s knows that you do none of this. I'm not sure why this book is so highly rated or how anyone can trust what else it states, especially because it fails to use approximate citations.

I have only read the first three chapters so far (on medicine rotation). I have not noticed any significant updates from the third edition. For example, IBD is not updated with biologic treatment options. The book adds a 100 new multiple choice questions, but that is all I have noticed so far.The book claims a student committee and provided feedback to improve the 4th edition, but it does not provide any specifics. It might be worth it to hold onto third edition. I will update the review as I see changes. As far as physical quality, pages feel cheaper than third edition.update 11/26/15I have now read about half the book and there are a few updated I have noticed.1) They added a few lines about the new oral anticoagulants (i.e. apixaban)2) BP guidelines have been updated with JNC 8other mistakes have not been fixed like pneumonia severity indexI am updating my review from 3 to 4/5

Great review material for the medicine shelf. Its comprehensive, yet concise at the same time. If you like to learn things in a categorical way with lots of tables and comparing/ contrasting, this is a good high-yield study resource. Lots of figures on clinical algorithms. It also covers diagnostic testing, which was really useful on the wards--tells you what tests to get and in what order to get them. I wish I had this book when studying for Step 1 honestly.I used this book + UWorld Q bank to study for the shelf and felt adequately prepared. As far as the product quality itself--the book came in great shape without any mark-ups. It arrived quickly and was packaged well.

Numerous errors throughout the book. Really poor publishing process with lack of proof-reading. Also, blatantly incorrect information that is shelf-exam relevant i.e. when to start triple-therapy for AIDS

This reminds me of FA but for 3rd year, but brightly colored with tougher pages. The information in this book is incredibly thorough! I'm amazed at the quality of the diagrams and the organization. This book is truly all you need to know to do well on the Internal Medicine shelf exams. It also doubles up as a good review for Step 2 CKHOWEVER, my only qualm is that my new book came a little beat up on the edges. But that's more of a problem with the shipping than anything.

free text format, no tables no comparisons just a monologue of thoughts in a small font. I really want my money back. What a waste of time and money.

I used this textbook during clinical rotations of PA school. It's pretty good! The medical students I was with on rotations recommended it. We did some readings with our preceptor using this text and he wasn't a fan, but understood why students enjoy reading it. I would recommend for any PA/medical student and wish I had ordered it sooner.

Used it during my medicine rotation and looked through it again for my step studying.. Did well above average thanks to this, OnlineMedEd and Uworld.
