1.5 stars.I didn't hate this book but the idea for the book is fantastic and the whole time I was intrigued but it fell so short. The story starts out with Victoria starting college. Immediately she makes a connection with a rich hottie who has never dated anyone else but for some reason singled out her and all the girls are jealous. Obviously. Next she realizes that she doesn't remember anything before a few weeks ago when she came to college. BUT SHE JUST BRUSHES IT OFF. Oh, I don't remember my parents or family or anything and I don't know who is paying for all the things in my life or how I am even here but no big deal! Ain't no thang! My credit card has money on it so I'm just gonna keep pretending nothing is wrong and go to my classes.Then her professor in one of her classes is extra hot and she feels like she knows him. Here is something I did like. When Victoria first meets Toby (or I guess the second time...) she immediately feels the familiarity. The way he looks, the way he smells, it's like she has already known him. At this point in the story I was like ok, here is where it is going to start getting good. Wrong. So wrong. Victoria keeps brushing things off until Toby sends a Valkyrie after her. Why a Valkyrie? Because she can see memories and is a "angel of death". Not entirely true to Norse mythology but I digress.But still, even for a time after the Valkyrie visits her she does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. She lets her rich boyfriend pamper her and doesn't do anything productive to the story or her "life" until she stumbles upon Toby being held captive in the rich boys daddies restaurant. But this is like 3/4 in to the book. The last fourth of the book she remembers somethings from a "true loves kiss spell" and then Toby proposes. AND THEN IT ENDS.Just like that. Leaves you wanting to know why the heck she only remembers a few hours from her life before but not wanting to actually buy the next book.
I first saw this book in an email recommended by someone the cover was beautiful. a swirl of blues and purples that seemed a little mysterious and intrigued me to go and buy it. So I bought it. i sat down and read it all in one day. It was amazing. I couldn't stop. i ate dinner while absorbed in reading.lets start with plot. i spent the first third or so of the book going what the hell happened to her and omg who did this and is 'it' going to be fixed oh and what the hell is 'it'. the unknown kept me entranced for the first half or so then pieces started falling into place which brought up more questions with every answer. it made it unpredictable and not one of those books you can easily guess everything that will happen.the characters are dynamic and interesting an evolve and not always what you would expect.
My Review:Overall: 3.5Performance: 4.0Story: 3.0Overall, I enjoyed listening to this audiobook. There were a few issues with the story though and I believe that part of that may have been world issues that weren't clarified...maybe. When the book begins, it's with Victoria realizing she has no memories of her life before this moment. And this is where I had the biggest issue with this story. The girl doesn't freak out...at all. She's really rather chill and laidback about it all, and that just didn't feel right. Now, like I mentioned before, this could be an unclarified world detail. This is a paranormal world and as the story develops, it's obvious that something supernatural has happened to Victoria. Is it possible that whatever happened to her (maybe a spell of some sort) that it could have also calmed her so she wouldn't react to her bizarre circumstances (I'm thinking a calming spell, maybe?) But I don't know...it's never explained and left as it was, it just didn't feel quite right.But that was just a little niggle. There were a lot of unanswered questions that flow throughout the story. And it's going to be hard to discuss any of them without revealing spoilers, because there are definitely a TON of unknowns throughout this story. Some answers are revealed in the story and some that are not. This is one of three books and there are a few other things that bothered me, but again, just like my initial niggle, I'm just not sure. At the end of this book, the story is nowhere close to being done...so it's possible that those things will be explained later.At times, the characters read as a little shallow. They are all going through some big emotional hits and that didn't always translate into their actions.Overall, I did enjoy listening to the audiobook. I thought the narrators did a good job. The world was interesting enough to keep me captivated. I'm just now sure about the story line between Toby and Victoria. I think I needed them to be more emotionally vested in one another to get me more emotionally invested.So kind of a wishy-washy review, but the book kind of gave me that feeling, too.
What a unique love story. Victoria arrives at college as a freshman. She does not remember anything prior to the day she arrived at school. On the first day of school in her math class she feels connected to the professor (Toby) who is really her long lost love. The story continues to tell how brave she is to face all these uncertainties of her life. Toby has been lost without Victoria knowing she died. But to see her again was a shock to him and then to realize she did not recognize him was agony for him. The jaguars shifters had control over Victoria's life and was using her to get to Toby. But neither of them knew who was behind it. Toby worked with the head witch to see if there was any way to retrieve Victoria's memories. An exciting tale of mystery, danger and suspicion. I can't wait to read the next book in this series to find out what happened. A very good read.
