Easy to read and understand. Gives a very practical approach to writing resumes. I liked how the author made me think about what the employer is looking for, and more importantly, what they are thinking as they are considering employing someone new.This book also answered some of my questions about what to put in a resume and what to leave out. Things like contact details, how far back to go with previous positions, mentioning referees, etc. Things not mentioned in other books or sources.I especially liked how this book guided me how to mention my past achievements. Something I was stuck with.Also reasonably up-to-date in regard to what to do with your online presence, and how this can affect the impression a potential employer can have of you.A good buy.
If you haven't written a resume, or updated yours for awhile, this little book offers the latest research on resumes. Some of the helpful information included in this book:* what words or phrases are passe and you should NOT use in your resume: team-player, driven, exceeded expectations, references furnished upon request, quick learner, self-starter etc.* what employers WANT to read in a resume* you actually have two resumes - the one you write and the culmination of your online presence and how to clean that one up if needed* how to find and use key words for a targeted resume* where to send or post your resume* what to do about scannable resumes* in-house referrals - a new site* niche jobs sites* a sample of a resume Mr. Bolles likes* perspective on cover lettersFound this slim and easy-to-read book full of invaluable information on resumes. I think it would be helpful for most job-seekers and those in the career development field. I bought a copy for my brother who asked about resumes.
As a recent university graduate, I was looking for something to help me build a resume for my job hunt, I had high hopes for this book as I have heard stellar things from the "What Color is Your Parachute" book this DID NOT live up at all!!!! It proved no real advice or examples, had no examples and it basically states cover letters as useless. Not to say the book was completely useless but I would have gotten the same or better advice anywhere else.
This books goes further into detail, in terms of resume work and job hunting, than his WCIYP series. It's a fantastic supplement to Bolles' main series. I highly recommend this book, especially after reading What Color is Your Parachute. Now if you're looking for templates, then this book isn't for you. Think of this material as an open book test: the answers are provided, but you have to write them down.
Bollos does an excellent job presenting basic understandings of how best resumes function, tips to create such and links to other sources that he recommends. I found it helpful as I began my resume writing process.
Very helpful especially for people that have been away from the job market for a while. The strategies are up to date and really good.
Good book for either writing your resume the first time or rewriting it for the second time. good investment of my time and money
