This was a very interesting history of the 106th and the entire Battle of the Bulge. The first-hand reports and stories made it much more fascinating, too, as did the few pictures included.I did notice a few typo-type errors, though nothing major, plus I found it confusing trying to keep all the names and units straight with where they were on the battlefield, otherwise I'd give it 5 Stars. I wish there had been more maps showing where each event took place, as trying to keep all that straight also added to my confusion. The only map on my Kindle version was at the beginning, which showed the 106th Division's location on Dec. 15, just prior to the battle. It probably would have also helped to keep a list of characters and units beside me while I read.Still, even with those criticisms I feel this book is a very worthwhile addition for any WWII bookshelf. The authors did an amazing job digging up the stories of these soldiers and then putting the entire thing together. Very recommended.
My father was part of the 106th so I was pleased to find the book. On a positive note, the historical perspective agreed with other information I have reviewed on what the 106th went through. However, I was surprised at the number of grammatical errors throughout the book. Frequent duplication of words within a sentence and wrong tenses throughout. It seemed either the three authors did not review their manuscripts, or the editor did not carefully review prior to printing.
“A map! A map! My kingdom for a map!†I don’t mean to trivialize this book by paraphrasing this quote, but some maps would have been so helpful. My father-in-law had been involved in the Battle of the Bulge and I had hoped to gain some insights into what he experienced. Given the format the author chose to present the information made it difficult. The book probably meets its intended purpose of recording the personal experiences of those involved. But the constant references to apparently changing military organizations, and the natural retelling, and retelling, and retelling of the same event becomes confusing. If that is what you are looking for, this book is for you.
The 106th was thrown into a very difficult situation and suffered tremendous losses, yet were able to hold on long enough for reinforcements to arrive. The German offensive was slowed enough to disrupt their timeline. This was a "green" division just arrived in the European theater.
I learned a lot about the units written about in this book very interesting read good for readers of American/German war history. I was born 10 years to the day after the BATTLE OF THE BULGE STARTED.
I listened to my uncle's accounts of his experiences in 422 IN and Dresden POW camp, read the published accounts of his comrades ( including Vonnegut), and studied several military histories of the actions around Snee Eifel. Your account is accurate and humanizes those warriors at the same time.
The writers portrayed the impossible situation of an untested division with a very long defensive line to defend. How they managed to do their best against the Nazi onslaught during the Battle of the Bulge.
