Beautifully written book. See towns you never heard of and stories too good to believe!!!
Just took this book out of the box ... and this is what I see. This is supposed to be a gift.
A mandatory read for all candidates to elected office prior to the next election.
A few years ago, my young daughter developed a mania for a particular fast food restaurant which specialized in tacos and other ‘Mexican’ food. I was unhappy each time she conned me into taking her there for two reasons. First, real Mexican food is superb. The nation has a cuisine worth study. This wasn’t Mexican food any more than the Burger King in Paris serves French food.My other complaint was that I’d eat what looked like enough but I was never fully satisfied. I bring this restaurant up because reading this book left me similarly dissatisfied. The many chapters are wonderfully titled leading one to expect a good deal more than is served in the ‘meat’ of the chapter. I think this writer has missed his mark: he should specialize in titling things. We start out in the first pages of the introduction where the author virtue signals that he thinks President Trump is a woman-hating racist who promotes conspiracy nonsense. The author treats most of his subjects as if he were an anthropologist studying an unusual tribe. This is telegraphed on the book’s cover which is subtitled, “America, Lost and Foundâ€. We here in flyover country don’t think we’re lost nor have we ever been lost and we don’t need to be found by some coastal elitist.Clearly, this writer thinks he’s discovering something wild or exotic as he occasionally visits the nation’s heartland. I’ll admit he works to at least try to be neutral but in the end, his east coast bias shows through. The chapters vary from leaving me with more questions than answers to uplifting. One I particularly enjoyed was reading about a non-violent drug offender President Obama pardoned. There’s one which illustrates an Ohio city struggling to maintain its education standards – especially music. However, he pays no attention to the reason the school’s budget is persistently cut or why such a promising musician and nursing student would throw it all away in a single pregnancy. Those two areas are the real story but they're not even mentioned.Studs Terkel in his ‘Hard Times’ and ‘Working’ created a paint by numbers way to address the type of project attempted here by Mr. Barry. I think the author could use a trip to the library to learn a bit about empathy for your subjects and depth of topic.
So it's four stars for presentation, quality and achievement - but my true experience was really three stars (more like two, in fact). But, that's because I brought unfair baggage to it and I came to the book prepared and expecting to be annoyed by it. I was, but that's not really the book's fault. So what do we have -Heartfelt slices of life from a variety of salt-of-the-earth people? Check.A few criminals and bad people who either redeem themselves, or who are not redeemed? Check.A few "moral of the story" anecdotes where we're supposed to feel good about ourselves as a unified nation? Check.A high-minded, often melodramatic tone that uses overly-excited verbs to convey emotion and 'intensity?' Check. All of this is interesting and engaging, and Dan Barry is obviously a very accomplished journalist. But every time I read stories like this, I don't see my fellow Americans. I see disconnected driftwood who happen to live in the same geographic part of the world that's delineated by lines on maps that I'm obligated by the rules of society to pay attention too. I don't have anything in common with a lot of these people - and even when I do, I don't really care. Anything from 2007-2016 (which is generally the scope of the book) feels like the doctor's notes of a terminally-ill patient. Who cares? We know the ending - half the country jumped overboard into full-on madness (and that same argument is made from both sides, so it doesn't even matter what side I'm on). The patient died. Now, is that fair to the book? Which is earnest, well-reported, and does a good job digging into these lives without judgement or unfairness? Absolutely not - which is why it's four stars. I can look at it objectively and say the people who are not cynical (nihilistic) like me will appreciate Dan Barry's more hopeful tone about a sprawling nation that's still got some life left. This would be a good Christmas gift for the idealistic college student in your life who has not yet experienced the full range of this country and its people.I have. I served this country, traveled this country, and now I've turned my back on it. Doesn't mean they should.
I think Dan Berry did a very good job portraying Americans from across the spectrum. These are little-known people in small towns or big cities the live day to day with whatever struggle they must endure: from fighting neighborhood violence, battling a bad economy, refusing to let go of a dream. Berry focuses on the people, who all have endured a struggle but who refuse to give up.The short essays are divided into eight chapters, all with a unifying theme like tolerance or hatred. The essays were written from 2007 to 2017. One story that stood out for me was a short essay on an Arizona rancher whose land borders Mexico in Naco, Arizona. One of his rancher friends was killed by drug smugglers and that incident made news years ago. The killer is assumed to be Mexican who quickly fled back into Mexico. The rancher talked about border security. Despite his friend's death, he does not believe a wall will do much good.Other essays that touched me was one on a Vietnamese immigrant who lost everything in Hurricane Katrina. Another one describes the struggles of a creamery in northern California whose owner suddenly left the cooperative, and 200 employees don't know if they will get paid. The title of this collection is fitting. All the people have their unique struggles for survival, yet they somehow retain hope for a better future even when the future doesn't look so good. There are many nice photographs throughout the book.
