When I started voice lessons again after many years away, the first piece my teacher gave me was 'Danny Boy' from this book. It's a very lovely arrangement of the classic folk song, and since I already knew the lyrics, it was an excellent choice for getting me back into singing. Since I don't play piano, the accompaniment CD is probably my favorite part (and I would note that if you don't like the tempo of any of the pieces, there are apps to adjust the speed available for computers and phones). There are a lot of beautiful arrangements in this book (Greensleeves, Amazing Grace, Scarborough Fair, Cross the Wide Missouri), and some you may not know (Homeward Bound) that will be worth learning.This edition is for Medium High voice, and I am a soprano, so all of the pieces are well within my usual range.
Good collection and decent arrangements of folk songs. I only wish the song list online also listed the key of each song so I could make a more informed choice when purchasing
I love having these folk songs to sing and it is set right in my range. It is not alto, but not crazy high either
This volume has very beautiful arrangements of some popular folk songs. "The Water Is Wide" is beautiful and flowing. Some of the arrangements are jazzy (Follow the Drinkin Gourd and a few others) and some are more traditional arrangements (such as Cindy). Great book with nicely played CD. Sometimes CDs are hard to sing with due to the piano players interpretation of the tempo markings, but most on this CD are good. One of my high school students didn't look very thrilled when I mentioned doing a folk song, but after hearing these arrangements she was excited about it. Great book for junior high and high school singers. Great folk song collection for voice studios. Nice recital, concert, and contest pieces.
Love the series! Fine arrangements of great quality folk literature that every singer should know! I use these all the time with HS beginner students. Highly recommended!
I sing in the Gay men's Chorus of South Florida, and that has given me the greatest joy I've had doing music my entire life. I am an older person trying to keep my voice together as I have "presbyphonia," old person's voice, along with acid reflux, and bouts with bronchitis possibly caused by the acid reflux. I've begun work with a voice coach who suggested getting "Folk Songs for Solo Singers." We are trying to strengthen the small muscles that control the vocal chords, and it is working. This book gives me something to look forward to at the end of practice sessions with scales.
I bought two copies of this for two of my students and one for me. The songs in this book are very nice. My only complaint is that the cover fell off my copy within a month.
These book contains a wonderful variety of folk songs. The arrangements are fun and beautiful! Great repertoire not only for developing voices within voice lessons but also for Solo & Ensemble!
