I am almost finished reading this book and I must say I have enjoyed it very, very much. There are many people, some in my own family, who have this experience. What I liked about it the most is that it has answered so many questions that I have had; also the author brings the Bible into each chapter with Book, Chapter and Verse - which helps to make it just that much more, not only believable, educational and inspiring. I definitely recommend reading this book to/for everyone, especially if you have any questions of heaven. It has helped me immensely.
I just lost my dad on October 15. Dad was a born-again Christian and served the Lord his whole life. I have been a Christian nearly 40 years. Despite this, I had such overwhelming grief over losing my precious dad. I don't know if it was sadness, exhaustion, irrational thinking, or what, but even though I knew he was in Heaven....at the same time it didn't seem real to me somehow - I couldn't grasp onto that peace and find that solid ground. It was confusing to me to wander in the fog of grief and despair that seemed inescapable. What was going on? Where was my peace and assurance? I prayed that the Lord would indeed lead me to that place of peace that passes all understanding. I saw this book on Fox and Friends, and ordered it immediately. When it arrived, I was reading it within minutes. Just a couple of chapters in, I had that overwhelming peace I was seeking. It was if Jesus Himself was speaking to me through this book and through Scripture. It changed my view of Heaven, of what Christ longs for in those of us here on Earth, and of death for those who are Christians. Truly, we do not mourn as those who have no hope! This book will bring great comfort - and a glorious preview of what awaits the Believer! The alignment between near death experiences and Scripture is so powerful! Not that we desire to die.....but this book will make you excited about going to Heaven one day! God is so loving and has so much in store for eternity for those who accept Jesus as Lord.
As an MD and one who ran and directed an ICU/ CCU for 25 years, I have also heard very similar stories. To be blunt, I have also had a NDE, and heard and felt things I can't begin to dicsribe!Do we slip into a different dimension? I know one thing, part from having my own experience I doubt these are anoxic brain reactions. I do believe there is a ' here after' a God and, unfortunately a hell, as I had one patient I personally resuscitated describe in all too much detail. Great read, make your own mind up after this book.
Imagine Heaven is so thoroughly researched that even a skeptic can see that Burke has thought of every angle. He's researched near death experiences (NDEs) from all sorts of people: those who have nothing to gain and a lot of credibility to lose (e.g., doctors), those from other faiths, those with disabilities here who have no disabilities in heaven, and those who had negative experiences after dying.I had a couple of secret beliefs about heaven that appear to be borne out in these accounts. I wondered if we would be the best version of ourselves (the energy of youth, the wisdom of experience, etc.), and that seems to be what people recount. We are still ourselves, and we still know the people who are important to us here. Another interesting point is that there is a life review -- a sort of highlight reel (or lowlight reel -- this ain't Facebook) of what you've done. You can see the ripple effects of your actions. That's something I've believed would happen, but it came with a surprise: those who had this experience didn't feel judged or condemned by God; on the contrary, any condemnation was self-inflicted.One of the clearest features of many of these experiences was being asked what one did with one's life... how well you loved others while on earth. It really does come down to the way Jesus simplified it for his followers: Love God and love people. All other laws or rules proceed from this.Words matter. Actions matter. The point of this life is to love others. Our choice to follow God (or our rejection of Him) has eternal consequences. But the choice is entirely ours; He has given us the free will to choose or to reject Him.Imagine Heaven has encouraged me to try to see others through God's eyes -- His love, mercy, and grace. Naturally I fail at this daily. But knowing a little about the amazing place that God has prepared for us makes me see this life differently, in the best possible way.Disclaimers: I finished reading an advance copy of this book a couple of weeks ago. I agreed to write an honest review. John Burke is my pastor of 18 years and a friend. However, if he'd written a dud, I'd be honest about it. Currently this ranks as my favorite of Burke's four books.

This book is the product of decades of research into NDEs and surveys of many studies that have been conducted.The author set out to analyze the many reported NDEs across cultures to determine if there were common, consistent elements and compare these reports to the many beliefs of life and death that exist in society.It's interesting that the author didn't initially set out to write this book but rather conduct a scientific analysis of NDEs, which the author was sceptical about. Also interesting is how the conclusions of just about all such studies tend to agree with one another. This book is a sort of encyclopedia of apl such research that reads like a novel.We invest much time and effort making sure we receive a sound education, succeed in sports, hobbies, consumer purchases, marriage, raising children and careers. Yet the question of what and why we believe what happens after we die barely receives a thought. If we do live on after our bodies die does it not make sense to also prepare for forever, which will make our lifespans seem like a pinpoint on history's timeline? This book can be an aid in doing so, and it is written in an engaging and exciting way that people can relate to, regardless of whether are religious, aetheist or unsure of what they believe.
