Packed with interesting and entertaining facts and legends for kids (and adults but def geared towards kids). My youngest could only read in small doses because it’s A LOT of info packed on the pages. They really enjoyed learning about Barcelona’s affinity for giants, dragons, and good versus evil. So many fascinating tid bits got them excited about our summer trip (we are going to Barcelona!).Highlights: executioners would sell dead people’s shoes which the townspeople put in front of their houses to ward off evil spirits.Gaudi didn’t use straight lines because there are none in nature. He was so obsessed with the basilica plans he stopped hygiene and wore shoes made of woven plant roots.My kids loved the section on chocolate and candies (my vote is churros) and the tradition of the poop log 💩Overall we really enjoy this book and it will join us on our travels. It got my kids excited to see the giant goldfish sculpture, see the sharks at the aquarium, the amusement park, fountains, statues and so many of the history rich areas of Barcelona.Highly recommend if you’re planning a trip with kids to get them engaged, or for a report for school, or just to learn about other places and cultures.Please note - this is not a travel guide for adults. No hotels, tours, prices etc are included.
If you are bringing kids along to a new city like Barcelona, the Lonely Planet Kids book provides a great introduction for the children. It has very little of the adult stuff about hotels and restaurants and nothing on how much they cost. It is all about sites and experiences.This lonely Planet book is divided into sixteen trails. There are marked starting points for each one on a map of the city, but no directions about getting from one attraction to the next along the trail. That must be the job of the adults. The groupings include history, castles, shopping, sports, parks, outdoor recreations, and food. I think that there should be more on food.There are over eighty pages in the book. Each page is rendered in bright color drawings and photographs. The images and the explanations each take up about the same amount of room, although I think that the images have the advantage. This is a great book for the kids and for adults who want to get the essence of the city without getting bogged down in details.
This is a great book for kids (and adults like me that prefer this to an adult travel guide) that can get kids excited about all the sites of this city. It directs kids to things like the Maritime museum, but you may find them even more intrigued by a giant claw sculpture and other less known and quirky sites. Originally Lonely Planet guides specialized in those sorts of things. I feel like this children's "Trails" series kind of revives that spirit of the unusual. Do be aware, though, that this book also features amusement parks--something I'd like to avoid if I've paid for my family to be halfway around the world! Highly recommended for children and their parents, but don't buy this unless you are prepared for your kids to add some unusual sites to your list of must-sees.
From my wife: I am originally from Barcelona and go back there often to visit family and friends. I got this book with the hope it would give me some new ideas of things to do with my kids, because we've already covered a lot in our frequent visits. The book hasn't disappointed: there are suggestions in there that I had never heard of, like the ghost metro station and the rose garden or things I knew about and I had forgotten. I particularly like that the activities are grouped by theme (animals, water-related, arts, street shows, etc.) The design is super cute and it's written for kids without being condescending. The only caveat is that some of the activities they list are seasonal, so don't expect to be able to cover them in a single visit to the city!
I have just returned from Barcelona and was ginven a chance to review this book. I wish the events happened in the reverse order. The book is very well done - colorful, great illustrations. It addresses all must-see attractions that were recommended to us and provides short straight-to-the-point info quips on them. It also talks about many other attractions that I am planing to see on my intended future trips to this wonderful city. I recommend Barcelona and this book to anyone thinking of traveling to Spain. My 11-year old son thought this book was very interesting as he was looking through it and recognizing places we visited: La Sagrada Familia, Columbus monument, Montjuic, etc.
I love all the pictures in this book. They are full color and there’s a ton of them. It’s very fun to look at, and not at all tedious. Each picture has a little blurb with an interesting tidbit about it. We found some of the pictures so intriguing that we went online to find out more about some of the places.This would be great for anyone, really, who is thinking about visiting Barcelona, but especially kids. It’s also just fun for virtual road trips or for kids interested in art, architecture, or geography.Because of Gaudi and Barcelona history, this book seems as much about art as it is geography.
This is a great book to anticipate and plan a trip to Barcelona. These days any kids that follow professional soccer are familiar with Barcelona as the home of Messi and Barcelona FC. My son would love to go there and this book shows that there is much more to see and experience than soccer -- although there is definitely soccer! The book seems to cover it all in a fun and enlightening genre that has stimulating pictures and informative text. It makes me want to really plan a trip.
