Although her books are very formulaic and close to YA fiction , I have been a fan of Ms. Hyde and have read eight of her books. Perhaps it is because of the repetitive formula of each of her books that I have not really liked this one . Perhaps it is just that I have read so many of them . Or perhaps it is characteristics of this particular book as well as the difficult-to-believe aspects of her formula that makes it my least favorite . But I think, on top of those factors, there were features of this book that I found annoying . Ms. Hyde's formula is that an adult, often an older adult, takes a teenager or more than one teenager , for a period of time , often on a road trip . Both of the characters has issues that they need to work out and they manage to do it together . The difficulty in that formula is the fact that the adult is either nearly or totally a stranger to the child . She attempts to explain the fact that other adults closer to the child allow this stranger to take the child away for a period of time . Usually there is a somewhat compelling reason and the responsible adults in the child's life are unwilling or unsuitable to exercise much guidance and control . But in this case the adults in the child's life , or at least one adult , is responsible and capable . But nonetheless she allows her granddaughter to go off with someone they have just met. I just cannot accept that that would happen in the situation . And there was one feature of the writing style that totally annoyed me . Instead of calling the girl in the story by her name the author kept calling her "the girl" . Ugh! I should probably get this book a 2 rating but because I've been a fan of Ms. Hyde's I just couldn't do that .
This is a story of two women, Sarah a teenager and Faith, a woman in her late thirties. For various reasons of self-preservation, they meet and go on a journey to find Sarah's beloved dressage mare Midnight, who Sarah's father sold to pay off gambling debts. Along the way, they meet a cast of characters who lend helping, healing hands.Sarah's mother recently died under suspicious circumstances, and Faith is escaping an abusive marriage. Together, they roam coastal California, following Midnight from show to show, farm to farm. There are conflicts between the two women, but mostly there is acceptance and the realization that leaning on each other is the best way to achieve their goals.It has become a reliable fact that Ms. Ryan Hyde does not disappoint, and this book is another in a long and growing line of remarkable stories of acceptance and optimism.
This is an amazing book. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to read a story about letting go of the past and starting over.
She has never disappointed me! I have read most her books and each one is just as good if not better than the last. This was the best yet!
Disappointed. Too much repetition and very drawn out. It seemed like there were sentences to just fill in pages. I was not a fan of Heavan Adjacent for those same reasons. Catherine Ryan Hyde has written many books that I thoroughly enjoyed. Not this one. I bought the audible version which unfortunately made a good tranquilizer at bedtime.
How nice to read a story about caring people. Catherine Ryan Hyde never disappoints with good characters, enough drama to make it interesting and a lot of love and caring mixed in! If you need a feel good book, this is it!
This wonderful novel about a young teenage girl and her love affair with a beautiful black horse is truly heartwarming. I think that the author's personal knowledge of horses and specifically "Dressage" makes this a really special story. The real drama starts when the girl's father sells "Midnight" without telling her! Then, while she is living with her grandmother at a rented bungalow on the beach and meets a lady in her thirties who is trying to recover from a split with her husband by living at a nearby beach house. The pair team up to track down the horse and steer clear of the girl's abusive father and the lady's soon to be ex-husband! A wonderful read as always from Ms.Hyde.
Having grown up with animals and riding my horse to school, I was fascinated by Midnight's reactions to his different riders and trainers. Obviously, the author has done her research well. The appropriate details included added depth to the novel.But the author shows her greatest understanding of human behavior when she shows her characters dealing with a wide range of emotions such as fear and loss.
